Harlem, New York City – Video Tour of West Harlem, Central Harlem & Apollo Theater
Hi I’m David Habitat in New York, in this video I’m gonna show you another fabulous neighborhood in New York known as Harlem, harlem’s a large area in northern Manhattan it stretches from the East River west to the Hudson River between 155th Street to the north and 110th Street to the south which is the northern boundary in Central Park.
Harlem is so big in fact that it would be impossible to cover just one video so we doing separate videos on the different districts apartment, the district’s a Harlem are West Harlem, Morningside Heights, central harlem, East harlem and Hamilton Heights. So get ready our first stop in our series on Harlem will be western central harlem, harlem was originally a Dutch village founded around 1658 and it’s named after the city of harlem in the Netherlands in the early nineteen hundred’s many african-americans moved to this area and in the nineteen twenties and thirties many famous artists musicians and businessmen became prominent in black culture to a higher level in a movement known today as the Harlem Renaissance.
Central harlem revolves around Marcus Garvey park named after the
jamaican-born activist journalists a community leader Marcus Garvey, in the summer of 1969 the park and the serial concerts to celebrate african-american music and promote black pride. Many famous musicians like Nina Simone, BB King, Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder participated in the event which was also called Black woodstock.
This is the famous apollo theater for the nineteen thirties they launch their amateur show night, since that moment many stars been born Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Mariah Carey just to name a few. A former President of the United States Bill Clinton moved his office to this building in 2001 West 125th Street, offer stunning views of Central Park and the Empire State Building it’s another testament to the important historic and cultural status og Harlem. One hundred twenty-fifth street which is kinda considered the main drag here in harlem, around 2001 a lotta companies came in here and set up shop got H&M, Old Navy, Starbucks coffee and even at the Magic Johnson theater is just down the street.
The Harlem market is right here on 116th Street near Malcolm X Boulevard now has a large selection of Afghan products like masks, musical instruments, clothes for men women and children, it open every day from 10 o’clock to eight o’clock you gotta come check it out it’s like a small pizza Africa right here in harlem.
